Austin Air Purifiers for Coronavirus

As part of our continuing series on air purifiers for coronavirus protection, we’re taking this week to focus on the Austin Air brand. One of our favorites for general use, Austin Air may also be able to help reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission in your home. Here’s what you need to know about this air purifier brand and which of its units we recommend for this application.

What Makes Austin Air Purifiers Useful for Coronavirus?

At the core of Austin Air’s design standards is high-quality HEPA filtration. As we’ve discussed in previous articles, HEPA filters are able to capture most viruses due to a phenomenon known as diffusion. While viruses are smaller than the perforations in many HEPA filters, the action of random air movements on incredibly light particles can lock them in the filter medium, rather than allow them to pass through with the prevailing flow of air.

Thanks to Austin Air’s design and 360-degree air intake, air brought in from the outside is constantly being cleaned and recleaned inside the machine. While this is targeted to ensuring that the maximum number of standard particles and VOCs become trapped in the filters, it may also help to improve the capture rate of smaller particles like viruses.

Tests conducted on Austin Air purifiers have found them to be 95 percent effective for particles down to 0.1 micron in diameter, in addition to meeting the standard HEPA requirement of 99.97 percent efficacy for particles greater than 0.3 microns. All Standard Austin Air units utilize filters that use 60 square feet of HEPA filtration material in order to improve the capture rate of small particles.

What Units Do We Recommend?

If you’re interested in using Austin Air’s units to reduce the risk of viruses in your home, we recommend the Bedroom Machine and Allergy Machine, both of which have a HEPA focus. Aside from the possibility of reducing your risks during the current viral epidemic, both of these air purifiers are great units that can help you breathe cleaner, purer air at all times. Both also feature carbon filters for the removal of gases, odors and VOCs. If gaseous contaminants are a prime concern for you, we recommend using the Bedroom Machine and HealthMate Plus.
