Dr. Oz’s allergy-friendly diet

Oatmeal is just one of the foods Dr. Oz recommends for those with allergies.

If you suffer from allergies, you already know how difficult it can be to manage your symptoms, especially during the height of the warm summer months. With the return of high pollen counts and other allergens infecting the air, it can often feel as if you are fighting a battle every time you step outside. To keep your body protected, there are steps you can take in order to best fight off your allergies, in addition to regularly taking any medications that have been prescribed to you.

Here is a diet that will help alleviate your allergy symptoms, from physician and television personality Dr. Oz:

  • Breakfast: When starting off the day, Dr. Oz recommends a healthy bowl of oatmeal. This is because the food, while delicious and good for you, is also a source of avenanthramides, which have been found to have the same strong antioxidant effects of vitamin C. Eating oatmeal will help soothe your symptoms and keep your body protected from allergens.
  • Lunch: For lunch, the television host suggests eating light with a nice kale salad. The anti-allergen effects of the leafy green food come from it’s high levels of quercetin, which is an antioxidant that has been shown to prevent immune cells from releasing certain toxins into the body, effectively stopping an allergy attack before it even takes place.
  • Dinner: To close out the day, you should keep it simple with a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. The soup will be effective at clearing out your sinuses, while the sandwich makes the meal a bit more substantial. Dr. Oz advises to steer clear of long-aged cheeses, as they can trigger an allergic reaction that leaves you feeling lousy.
