Ways to reduce your indoor allergies

Control your allergies this winter.

Just because the United States is in the middle of a record-setting cold snap, allergy sufferers will find no relief from their symptoms inside the house. Poor air quality and an abundance of indoor allergens will plague those with the disease all winter long. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), over 50 million Americans suffer from from allergies, making it the fifth leading chronic disease among every age group as well as the third most common disease among children under 18-years-old.

To help those combat their asthma and allergy symptoms, Living Green Magazine has created a list of ways people can reduce their symptoms this winter. Here are a couple of their helpful suggestions:

Maintain an even temperature: One of the biggest causes of indoor allergies is humidity, because a humid house is a breeding ground for allergens such as dust mites and mold. To fight this, homeowners should keep the thermostat at 70 degrees and the humidity levels no higher than 50 percent throughout the house. This will help prevent moisture from building up and producing mold. To keep the machines running well, replace the system’s filters at least once per month.

Remove your carpeting: Getting rid of your carpets and replacing them with hardwood is a relatively expensive option, but might be the best way to improve your health in the long-run. Allergens can hide and collect in the carpet and can be missed while you are cleaning, but dust mites and mold will be more obvious – giving them less opportunity to trigger your symptoms.
