Can living on a farm help reduce environmental allergy symptoms?

Living on a farm has been shown to reduce environmental allergy symptoms.

A new study published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology suggests that people who live in farming areas may experience less severe environmental allergy symptoms than those who reside in urban communities.

"The immune system of people who work in farming is frequently exposed to a wide range of bacteria, fungi, pollen and other irritants, which may all trigger a response that protects the person against hypersensitivity," states redOrbit.com. "Someone who works in a farming environment may prevent or dampen hypersensitivity to the most widespread plant allergens, such as grass and birch pollen."

According to the source, scientists previously thought that this only applied to people who were born and raised in rural areas, but the newest research indicates that even individuals who grew up in cities can experience relief if they beginning spending a lot of time in a farming community.

Even if you don't live on a farm, there are lifestyle changes you can make and products for around the home that you can buy to keep your allergy symptoms from impeding on your quality of life. Since many properties are air-tight in order to save on energy costs, pollutants such as pet dander, pollen, mold, dust mites and tobacco smoke can easily become trapped indoors.
