How to deal with allergies when visiting relatives

Follow these tips for managing your pet and other allergies during the holiday season.

You've totally allergy-proofed your home, turning it into a haven for you and your family, but what happens when you have to stay somewhere else for an extended period of time? Many people with allergies suffer needlessly during the traditional family visits at this time of year, either because their family members aren't aware of how to help them combat allergies or because they don't know what to ask for during visits. Here are some tips for managing your health during this time:

  • Ask relatives to keep pets out of the guest room. If you have pet allergies and are going to stay in a home with the type of pet you're allergic to, head off any problems ahead of time by requesting that the pet be kept out of the room you'll be staying in for a certain period of time beforehand.
  • Bring your own bedding. If the allergens are particularly dense in the home you're visiting, or if you suffer from particularly acute allergies, it can be a good idea to just bring along your own pillows and blankets to replace potentially allergenic ones given to you by your hosts.
  • Share your doctor's orders. Sometimes, unfortunately, people who are not particularly sensitive to allergy-related issues might not be convinced they actually need to provide accommodations for you until they hear that it was required by a doctor. The "doctor's orders" phrasing places the responsibility on the medical professional, rather than on you, so even stubborn relatives are likely to comply with your requests.
  • Pre-medicate. Before entering the home, making sure you are already well dosed with asthma or allergy medication will prevent allergies from even setting in (consult a doctor before doing this).
