The Airpura T400 is a compact air purifier designed specifically for tobacco smoke. Its deep bed of 12 lbs of activated carbon adsorbs over 4,000 harmful chemicals and gases found in tobacco smoke, including at least 60 carcinogens, to reduce smoke and lingering odors. A Tar-Barrier pre-filter traps sticky tobacco tars before they reach the carbon. The T400 covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. at 2 air changes per hour (ACH), depending on fan speed, and runs as quiet as 32 dB on low.

HEPA-Barrier vs. True HEPA
The T400 uses a HEPA-Barrier, not a medical-grade True HEPA filter. Like Airpura's C-series and DLX models, it gives most of its filter space to carbon, because carbon is what reduces the gases, chemicals, and odors in smoke. The HEPA-Barrier captures 95% of particles at 1 micron. A True HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. Sizing Your T400
At high speed, the T400 delivers about 2 air changes per hour in 1,000 sq. ft. with 8-foot ceilings. How many air changes you need depends on your space and how quickly smoke enters it, because the unit needs to clean the air faster than new smoke comes in. Every person and situation is different, but heavy smoke areas like bars, restaurants, and other public smoking areas often call for 10–12 ACH. That may mean more than one unit.
When smoke odors and gases are the main concern, we suggest sizing on medium speed. The T400 has a 3-speed fan. On medium, it runs quieter than on high, and air moves through the carbon bed more slowly, giving the carbon more time to adsorb smoke chemicals. For larger spaces, the Airpura T700 is the bigger tobacco smoke model. In a small room that needs a high air change rate, though, a 700-series unit can draw its own clean air back in, so two or more T400s are often a better fit. Many factors come into play when choosing an air purifier, including the contaminants, coverage (enough air changes for the level of off-gassing), how quickly things are off-gassing, particulate matter, and your own sensitivities. The uses above are suggestions. Air purification isn\'t a black-and-white science, and things outside our control, like humidity or where the unit is placed, affect results. We wish there were one unit for every need, but there are always trade-offs, like sound versus power and budget versus filtration.
