The Airpura C400DLX is a compact, all-metal air purifier built to reduce heavier concentrations of airborne chemicals, VOCs, gases, and odors. It holds 12 lbs of Airpura's DLX carbon, a special impregnated blend with potassium iodide that adsorbs a broader range of chemicals than standard activated carbon. That makes the C400DLX a strong choice for smaller spaces dealing with TCE and PCE, sulfur gases, nitrogen dioxide, highway exhaust, and volcanic gases (VOG). It covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. at 2 air changes per hour (ACH), depending on fan speed, and runs as quiet as 32 dB on low.
DLX Carbon for Heavier Chemical Loads
The DLX blend is what sets this unit apart. Potassium iodide acts as an oxidizer that helps the carbon bind chemicals quickly, so the C400DLX can handle higher concentrations of chemicals and VOCs than units with standard carbon. Airpura's carbon blends are formulated to adsorb over 4,000 airborne chemicals and VOCs. Three fan speeds (low, medium, and high) let you slow the airflow for longer dwell time in the carbon bed, which improves adsorption when chemical levels are high.
HEPA-Barrier: Built for Chemicals First
Like Airpura's other C, T, and DLX models, the C400DLX uses a HEPA-Barrier post filter rather than a medical-grade True HEPA. Most of the space inside the unit is dedicated to carbon, so the HEPA-Barrier captures 95% of particles at 1 micron instead of 99.97% at 0.3 microns. If ultrafine particles are your main concern, a True HEPA unit is the better fit. If chemicals, gases, and odors come first, the C400DLX gives you more carbon where it counts.
C400DLX vs. C400: What's the Difference?
Both units share the same compact 400-series housing, motor, pre-filter, and HEPA-Barrier. The difference is the carbon. The C400DLX uses Airpura's DLX impregnated blend to adsorb greater concentrations of chemicals and VOCs, while the Airpura C400 is a good fit for lighter chemical loads at a lower price.

At high speed, the C400DLX delivers about 2 air changes per hour in 1,000 sq. ft. with 8-foot ceilings. The number of air changes you need varies widely, and there are many rules of thumb. For example, clients with allergies or asthma often aim for 3–7 ACH, while areas with heavy VOCs or smoke may even call for 10–12 ACH. The right number for you depends on what the contaminant is, how heavy it is, how quickly it's coming in, how much filtration you want, and your own sensitivities.
When VOCs are your main concern, size the unit on medium speed so air passes through the carbon more slowly, and make sure it can clean the air faster than the source adds to it. If you're aiming for more air changes in a small space, it may be tempting to choose a 700-series unit. In very small areas, though, a 700 can sometimes create a vortex effect. That means the unit can draw its own clean air back in instead of moving air through the whole room. To reduce that risk, we recommend more than one C400DLX or a 600-series model instead. Many factors come into play when choosing an air purifier, including the contaminants, coverage (enough air changes for the level of off-gassing), how quickly things are off-gassing, particulate matter, and your own sensitivities.
