Study: Two asthma medications are more effective than one

Patients who use more than one asthma medication are more in control of their symptoms, a new study finds.

According to a new study, those who suffer from asthma are more likely to benefit from combining medication treatments instead of simply sticking with one method. While this will require doctors and patients to further tweak and change prescriptions, it will ultimately be to the advantage of the person with the breathing affliction.

The research was conducted by Dutch scientists at the University of Amsterdam, reviewing the data collected from 64 asthma drug trials. According to the researchers, patients who used a combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting bronchodilators had around half as many symptom flare-ups or attacks as those who relied on just the steroids alone.

This information might come in very handy for those who are having trouble managing their aggressive asthma symptoms. The Global Initiative on Asthma (GINA) estimates that more than 300 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with this disease, and that number is expected to rise to 400 million by the year 2025. Asthma rates in North America are among the highest in the world.

“There were some things we expected beforehand, like that oral therapies would be inferior to inhaled steroids, but asthma is a very individual disease and some patients will not experience any symptoms and other patients will suffer a lot from the symptoms,” lead author Dr. Rik Loijmans of the University of Amsterdam wrote in the report.
