Fan CFM and delivered CFM are two different airflow numbers for the same air purifier. Fan CFM is the airflow rating before any filters are installed; delivered CFM is what actually comes out once the air has passed through the filter media — and it’s almost always the lower number.
If you’re shopping for an air purifier, you’ll see CFM (cubic feet per minute) listed in the specs. It’s the standard measurement for how much air moves through a unit over a given period of time, and it tells you a lot about a unit’s efficiency and what size room it can realistically cover. But not every CFM number means the same thing, and mixing them up can leave you with a purifier that doesn’t do what you expected.
Why People Measure CFM
CFM comes up in two different contexts around the house.
The first is heating and cooling. Contractors measure CFM in ductwork and air handling systems to make sure the air coming into a space matches the air being pumped out. Air is a physical force — when CFM is badly mismatched between supply and return, it creates pressure imbalances that need to be corrected.
The second is air purification, which is what we’re focused on here. CFM tells you how much air actually gets cleaned in a given stretch of time. The goal is to stay ahead of whatever’s in the air — dust, smoke, allergens, VOCs — by scrubbing it out faster than it’s being added. That’s where Air Changes per Hour (ACH) comes in: the number of times the air in a space is fully cycled through the purifier in an hour.
The math is straightforward:
Delivered CFM × 60 ÷ room’s cubic footage = ACH

Why Air Purifiers Have Two CFM Numbers
Here’s the part that trips people up: CFM for an air purifier can be measured two different ways.
Fan CFM is the airflow rating without a filter in place — essentially, how fast air would move through the unit if nothing were slowing it down.
Delivered CFM is the airflow you actually get once that air has passed through the filter media. Because filtration adds resistance, delivered CFM is almost always the lower of the two numbers.
Both go by a few different names, so it helps to know the aliases:
- Fan CFM: also called pre-filter CFM or motor CFM, depending on the manufacturer
- Delivered CFM: also called post-filter CFM
Worth a second look: “pre-filter CFM” is a naming coincidence that trips people up, since air purifiers also have a physical pre-filter stage (the mesh or foam layer that catches larger debris first). Pre-filter CFM doesn’t mean airflow after passing through that pre-filter — it means the airflow rating taken before any filters, including the pre-filter, are installed in the unit at all. It’s the same number as fan CFM, just a different label.
The same logic applies on the other side: post-filter CFM is the airflow measured after the air has passed through every stage of filtration in the unit — pre-filter, HEPA, carbon, whatever’s installed. That’s exactly what delivered CFM measures too; the two terms describe the same number.
You’ll see these labels used in practice, and it helps to recognize both sides. One more thing worth knowing: CFM is always an estimate. Something as small as a tighter pleat in a HEPA filter can shift the number slightly.
Why the Distinction Matters
We hear from a lot of shoppers trying to figure out CFM for their living room, bedrooms, and hallway — and confusing fan CFM and delivered CFM is one of the most common ways people end up with the wrong unit.
Fan CFM is closer to a theoretical number: what a manufacturer measured under test conditions, without a filter installed. Delivered CFM is what you’ll actually get once the unit is set up and running in your home.

Nobody misled them — the manufacturer’s number was accurate for what it measured. It just wasn’t the number that predicted real-world performance.
