Study: Public smoking bans have decreased rate of asthma in children

Smoking bans have been found to improve the health of children.

As everybody knows, there are a myriad of things that pregnant women cannot consume or be around to ensure the health of their growing baby. Drinking, smoking, air travel and certain foods have all been linked at one point or another to damaging effects on a fetus. According to a new study, public smoking bans have helped reduce the number of preterm births, as well as the amount of children who are admitted to the hospital every year due to breathing complications as a result of asthma.

The study was published in the medical journal The Lancet, and it is the first comprehensive review of smoking bans that has been conducted. The researchers analyzed the information from 11 different studies that were done in North America and Europe, which involved nearly 300,000 cases of asthma. The team of doctors found that, within a year of public smoking bans taking effect in certain countries, the amount of hospital admittance for children due to asthma had dropped by a full 10 percent.

There is more work to be done in order to ensure the health of children, 40 percent of whom are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke globally, according to the study. This leads to massive hospital expenses, as in 2007 the United States totaled over $50 billion dollars in medical fees due to people needing their asthma symptoms treated.
