Report: Air quality around the globe to worsen

According to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), worsening air quality as a result of global climate change is going to have a major – and disastrous – effect on people’s health worldwide in the future. Protecting our health as an international community is one of the major goals of the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that were first announced by the Obama administration at the beginning of last month.

Even in our current environmental circumstances, nearly 4 million people across the planet die prematurely each year as a result of heart and lung complications that can be traced directly to breathing in air that is heavily polluted. These numbers are only going to continue to increase as the air quality worsens due to pollution, particularly in areas that are already affected, such as Los Angeles and Phoenix, to give a couple of U.S. examples.

“As we are doing pollution planning, we have to begin to make sure that we are including the climate change impacts,” assistant vice president at the American Lung Association Janice Nolen told NBC News.

The Obama administration has made one of its goals very clear for the rest of the time that the president is in office – improving air quality in the United States and reducing our societal contribution to global warming. While the EPA regulations have yet to go into effect, they are hoping for a 30 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions across the country by the year 2030.
