Spring allergy sufferers in Illinois are going to be hit particularly hard this year due to an increased pollen count.
With the frigid weather of the polar vortex rapidly becoming a distant memory, experts are warning spring allergy sufferers to brace themselves for what is being referred to as the “pollen vortex.” Allergists are anticipating that this spring allergy season – though delayed due to the lingering cold weather – is going to be very severe, and people should start taking preventative measures now.
According to Dr. Joseph Leija, who performs a daily pollen count at the Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, Illinois, mold, tree and grass pollens are going to start infecting the air simultaneously as the frigid weather finally breaks. This is going to be substantial, as the record amounts of snow the Midwest has been experiencing over the past few months has provided plenty of nourishing moisture for the environment. This means that all of the blooming plants and trees are going to produce more pollen than they normally would.
“Preventative measures such as keeping windows closed to preserve air quality and proactively taking allergy medication with the guidance of a certified allergist will help maintain and improve health,” Dr. Leija told local reporters. “If you’re sneezing and itching, you’re having allergy symptoms.”
Dr. Leija has been taking the daily pollen count at Gottlieb Memorial for more than two decades and says that it is never too early to begin protecting yourself against allergy symptoms.
