It’s important for pregnant women to keep asthma under control

Good asthma control is especially important for pregnant women.

When women become pregnant, they have an obligation to keep themselves healthy — not only for the sake of their own well-being, but for their babies’ as well. A review featured in The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG) on Friday, September 6, reinforces how important it is for pregnant women to keep their asthma under control, as failing to do so can adversely affect the health of their babies.

According to ScienceDaily, women whose asthma symptoms act up during pregnancy are at a greater risk of requiring a Caesarian section and birthing infants who weigh less than they would have otherwise. Though it’s natural for women to worry about whether asthma medication is safe for their fetuses, specialists agree that undergoing treatment is in the best interest of both the mother and the baby.

“Education is key for anyone, especially pregnant women, to manage their asthma,” Jason Waugh, editor-in-chief of TOG, said in a press statement. “This includes understanding the condition and its treatment options, trigger avoidance, asthma control, adequate use of devices and the importance of adherence to medication. Any women who have concerns about their asthma management and management during pregnancy should contact their [general practitioner] or midwife for further advice.”

The good news is that there are simple ways for women to keep their asthma under control while they’re pregnant. By having air purifiers installed in their homes, individuals who suffer from this chronic respiratory disease can significantly reduce their exposure to harmful indoor pollutants that exacerbate symptoms.
