How to fight common indoor air pollutants

Here a couple of ways to fight indoor air pollution.

It is often easy to think that air pollution is strictly an outdoor problem no matter how often we are reminded of the contrary. Perhaps it's the natural assumption that the walls of our homes will protect us from outdoor pollutants but the fact is that the air indoors can sometimes be more harmful than what we breathe outside, even with the threats of ozone, smog and haze surrounding us.

Lead, formaldehyde, radon, fire retardants and other substances, even chemicals used in cleaning products, can cause significant harm if we are not careful. Additionally, while some pollutants are tracked into the home with our clothes and shoes, others come with new mattresses and furniture or the fresh coat of paint on our walls.

Here are two tips on how to reduce the sources of some of these pollutants:

Clean your floors: A little know fact is that both chemicals and allergens can accumulate and live in dust for decades. Simply by using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, you can limit the amount of toxins and fire-retardant chemicals along with naturally occurring allergens like pollen, pet dander and dust mites. The purpose of a HEPA filter is to ensure that dust and dirt don't come back out of the vacuum's exhaust. To be extra careful, mopping helps clean up the pollutants that vacuuming missed.

Conduct tests: Testing for radon, whether you have an old home or new one, is a legitimate way of protecting the health of you and the people you share your living space with. This colorless, ordorless gas has been proven to increase occurrences of lung cancer, presently standing as the second leading cause of the affliction in America. If you smoke and have inhaled radon, your chances of contracting a serious illness rise significantly.
