How to combat common winter allergens

As the weather cools down, Americans have to worry about indoor allergens.

While it's true that the cold weather offers a several-month-long respite from outdoor allergies, people across the United States need to be ready to combat the indoor allergies that are prevalent during the winter.

"There are days where I'm so congested that I just want to take some medicine and go to bed and kind of sleep through it," local resident Jessica Stine told KCTV5 News in Kansas City, Kansas.

According to the source, there are a few main pollutants that you need to be aware of and, thankfully, there are steps you can take toward limiting their presence in your home.

Dust mites – The best way to combat these contaminants is to invest in a vacuum with a HEPA filter and use it on your carpets weekly. You may also want to wash your bedding more often than usual.

Mold – This potentially hazardous fungus can grow anywhere that moisture is prevalent, so make sure you don't have any leaks and that you're keeping the inside of your residence dry.

Pet dander – Chances are your dog or cat will be spending more time indoors this winter, too, which means you and everyone in your house will be exposed to an even larger amount of pet dander. One way to deal with this is to keep your furry friend out of your bedroom so the allergen doesn't build up on your bed and prevent you from sleeping well at night.
