New Report on Polluted Cities Useful for Allergy Sufferers

Many allergy sufferers pay close attention to the state of their outdoor air during the spring season. Seasonal pollen can cause that hacking, sneezing and coughing that are some of the annoying symptoms of seasonal allergies.

But some allergic people in particular communities also encounter higher levels of air pollution. This, combined with seasonal allergies, can really amp up the symptoms. It might make things challenging for people trying to get around and do their business each day.

Back in 2015, we covered a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council on the 35 “Sneeziest and Wheeziest” cities in America.

That was 10 years ago, and although we don’t have an updated report from this office, there’s a new one from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) that shows how things have changed. Over time, the emissions levels from different cities shift: industry footprints change, growth and development alter communities, and other factors also apply.

Different Cities

In 2015, the NRDC named Richmond, Virginia as the top sneeziest and wheeziest American city. Now, in the AAFA report, Richmond has slid all the way down to number eight on the list. Philadelphia, which ranked in the top four a decade ago, isn’t even in the top 20.

Places like Oklahoma City and Memphis are still high up on the list, and they’re joined by New Orleans, which takes second, and Little Rock, Arkansas (number six). That’s not to mention locations like Greenville and Greensboro in the Carolinas, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, along with Augusta, Georgia.

So what can you do if you live in one of these new allergy centers?

Well, one thing you can do is to stay inside when possible. But even indoors, you might not be completely safe from higher levels of these pollutants, either the pollen or the other emissions, unless you have a system in place to clean these contaminants out of your indoor air.
