AAFA: Wichita, Kansas, tops list of worst cities for fall allergies

According to the Allergy Foundation of America, Wichita, Kansas, is the worst city to live in if you have fall allergies.

Each year, the Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) publishes its Fall Allergy Capitals report — a research project sponsored by prescription nasal spray company DYMISTA that alerts Americans to the cities throughout the United States where seasonal allergies are at their worst. During the fall, ragweed is the most ubiquitous outdoor allergen, but mold and other irritants can also contribute to more severe symptoms than usual, reports the source.

“Ragweed grows in urban areas, such as in cracks in sidewalks, along sides of roads and on roofs of buildings,” Mike Tringale, the AAFA’s vice president of external affairs, told USA Today. “AAFA encourages the approximately 40 million Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies to learn more and consult an allergy specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment of seasonal allergy symptoms.”

According to the AAFA, these are the top 10 cities where fall allergies are particularly severe:

  1. Wichita, Kansas
  2. Jackson, Mississippi
  3. Knoxville, Tennessee
  4. Louisville, Kentucky
  5. Memphis, Tennessee
  6. McAllen, Texas
  7. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  8. Dayton, Ohio
  9. Chattanooga, Tennessee
  10. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

If you live in one of these areas, there’s a good chance you may be suffering from a number of irritating symptoms including itchy eyes, sneezing, a runny nose and a sore throat. Unfortunately, due to factors such as climate change, experts predict that ragweed allergy season will last longer than usual this year, so it’s more important than ever for people to find relief.
