Are you suffering from the flu or allergies?

Make sure you know what illness you are suffering from before beginning any treatments.

Though the record-setting cold snap that enveloped most of the United States is now over, we are still in the heart of the winter months, which poses a health problem for many. The winter is a time when diseases and germs are commonplace and get passed around from person to person on a daily basis. If you are not careful you can end up contracting an illness from any number of unavoidable surfaces – it is one of the downfalls of living in a highly populated environment. But it is also important to be diagnosed and treated correctly for whatever virus you have.

Doctors have noted that the initial symptoms of the cold, bronchitis, flu and allergies are all very similar, and it can be difficult to determine which an individual is suffering from. In Central Texas, there are plenty of things floating around in the air that can make a person – whether they have allergies or not – sick. According to Dr. Bill Howland of the Allergy and Asthma Center of Austin, there is currently a perfect storm of respiratory problems due to normal winter illnesses and a higher than average cedar pollen count.

Dr. Howland told local Austin news affiliate KVUE that flu signs should be clear to anybody who has the condition. It is much worse than cold and allergy symptoms and patients will often resist the urge to get out of bed or move around. He also tells patients who do have allergies to stock up on medication during the winter, and be more diligent and consistent with using the medicine.

If the disease feels viral, Dr. Howland recommends visiting a doctor within the first three days, when treatments are most effective.
