Allergy season arrives early for Georgia residents

People in Georgia are suffering from spring allergies due to the warm weather.

Just two weeks ago, residents of Georgia were experiencing the worst winter weather in decades. The polar vortex that covered large parts of the country led to snow and ice in the South, causing massive traffic jams and shutting down schools and businesses. This is a stark contrast to the warm weather that has now moved into the state, where temperatures this week have climbed all the way to the 70s. This highly fluctuating weather is wreaking havoc on those who suffer from seasonal allergies.

The Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic has reported that the pollen count in the state this week is at 224, when just last week it was at one. The low count for the past few weeks has been due to the snow and ice covering all of the trees and roads, so there was no pollen in the air for people to breathe in. Since the spring weather is already starting to come around, many have been able to enjoy time outside, while those with allergies have been left to start dealing with their symptoms.

According to Dr. Michael Behnia, who works as a pulmonary and critical care physician at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, says that allergy season in Georgia usually begins around the spring, but this year it is moving up even earlier, cutting down the relief time for those who need it. Dr. Behnia told local reporters that Augusta is one of the worst cities in the United States when it comes to allergies, due to its location, climate and industrial pollution.
