Where Is the Best Place to Put a Purifier in a Room?

When it comes to getting the most out of your air purifier, in some ways, placement is everything. This has to do with the way that air currents work, and how air circulates in your indoor space.

This is just one of those fundamental steps to optimizing your air quality with a new air purifier purchase. Others include having the right filter system, and maintaining filters correctly, as well as running units at the right speeds, and calculating metrics like cubic feet per minute, or air changes per hour.

But when it comes to placement, this is important, for several reasons.

Why It Matters

One reason you want to place an air purifier correctly is to get access to the contaminants that you want to remove.

A floor-standing air purifier is not a whole-house system – it works on a specific region of your home – so if you have something like smoke or off-gassing or even pet dander, in a particular area of the house, that’s where you want your air purifier to be.

Pet dander is a good example, too, because you can analyze where your pet spends the most time in the home. If you’re trying to remove allergens from a cat or dog, look at where the animal sleeps, eats, and plays the most. Maybe you think of your pooch as being mostly in the living room area, jumping on people, but when you look at it (the hair can be a clue) he or she spends the most time curled up in the bedroom.

On the other hand, if the problem is off-gassing, look at where the particles are emitted. Off-gassing occurs when furniture, consumer goods, or building materials give off dangerous gasses, and mitigating these well requires a good carbon bed, and again, correct placement of the air purifier system.

Another concern is around air currents – It may be more effective to elevate the unit for optimal results.  Especially if it is a smaller unit.

Table-Top Air Purifier Tricks

Here’s the thing – sometimes people don’t want to keep an air purifier on top of a table.

It doesn’t look good, and it’s not intuitive to your space.

If it is a smaller unit and you plan on setting it on the floor, you may want to reconsider and elevate it because remember air flow is critical for the unit’s effectiveness.

Here’s a tip – look for an old or relatively inexpensive piece of furniture that’s small enough to go wherever you want to place the air purifier. Then install your machine on top of it. Make sure everything is stable and steady, and that your air purifier has the right access to the air around it – that there aren’t any unusual obstructions.

This way, you can keep the aesthetic that you want in your space, and also have your air purifier working away, the way you want it to. The other option is to build a hutch or shelf projecting from a wall, but that would take significantly more work. Think about your interior design style (minimalist, retro, modern, etc.) and choose your “pedestal” accordingly.

Avoid Constrictive Spaces

Another tip is to have the air purifier in a space where air moves freely.

That might be a bedroom, a living room, or a large kitchen. It’s less likely to be a bathroom, a closet or a hallway. One of the things you might see googled most in air purifier shopping is – is my hallway too narrow?

A wider hallway can be an absolutely appropriate place for one of these machines, but a narrower or tighter hallway might really make the unit less effective.

Again, metrics like air changes per hour play a role here. You might have the air purifier in an open space, but it might be a space that’s much larger than what the machine is rated for, and so you don’t get the overall cleaning results that you’d want.

Calling for Reinforcements

It’s important to also think about this – you don’t just need to do everything with one air purifier unit. You might want to have additional units in each major room of the home, living room, bedrooms, etc.

This makes the setup more versatile and enables you to trap contaminants that move throughout the house.

All of this helps you to brainstorm how this is going to work in your particular space. Every home is different, and every strategy needs to take into account what you’re dealing with in terms of square footage, contaminants, and air flow.
