How to Choose and Place Air Purifiers for Maximum Coverage

Healthy Asian woman is operating an air purifier while relaxing at home, enjoying a moment of tranquility.

Here’s a question that many customers have asked us: “can one air purifier cover my whole house, and where should I put it for best results?” Well, we’re glad you asked!

One air purifier rarely does a good job of cleaning an entire house, unless you live in a very small space with an open floor plan, like a one-room studio, and buy a very powerful unit.

Air purifiers are rated for a certain room size based on how much air they can move and filter per hour; walls, doors, and stairwells, and even furniture, all block that airflow. Keep this in mind: even with doors or other apertures open, air doesn’t circulate evenly from room to room. That means bedrooms and corners can end up with much dirtier air than the open area where the purifier sits.

Think about using this approach: use one purifier for your main living area, and another for the primary bedroom or wherever you spend the most time during the day or night. You’ll also want to choose an air purifier with good metrics. Start with taking a look at delivered CFM (cubic feet per minute) for your appliance.

As far as placement, you’ll want to put your primary unit in the most central, unobstructed spot you can find—ideally a few inches away from walls and heavy furniture, with the airflow going into the target room or space, instead of out into a corner or a hallway. Avoid tucking it behind sofas or curtains, or directly under shelves or other objects that trap air. Keep interior doors open as much as possible if your goal is to do the full space, and run the fan on at least a medium setting, so that air actually circulates through the filter, not just staying around the device. For multi-story homes, a single purifier on one floor will have very limited impact upstairs or downstairs; it’s usually better to have one unit per floor, or a portable unit you move to the room you’re actively using.

Moving Units

Although it is not recommended to move a unit from room to room, sometimes you may have no other option, due to budget, space, or other limitations.  If you do need to move a unit, for example, from the main living area to the bedroom, move the unit about 1-2 hours before bed, to the bedroom, and allow it to run before you head in to sleep.  Keep the door shut to purify the bedroom space most efficiently.

If particulates are the concern, it is fine to run the unit on high for that 1-2 hours to get more air changes per hour (ACH).  If VOCs, odors and gases, along with particulates, are the concern, it is better to run the unit on medium, keeping the door shut.

This will allow the room to be purified before you go in to sleep, and keeps air cleaner throughout your rest.  Once you are in the room, it’s okay to run the unit on any setting that allows you to sleep the most peacefully.

Sweet dreams and healthy living.
