For a big house, the number of air purifiers you need depends less on the house as a whole, and more on how many distinct spaces you actually live in at the same time, where you like to be within the home on a regular basis.
Start with this rule of thumb:
Plan on one appropriately sized purifier per main living area, and one in each regularly used bedroom (you decide if the guest bedroom counts or not).
Most portable air purifiers are designed to clean one room or open-concept space effectively. Each unit has a recommended coverage area in square feet. A larger home almost always has multiple rooms and hallways where air doesn’t circulate freely, so a single purifier in the hallway won’t clean everything evenly.
For many big homes, all of the above works out to 3–6 purifiers: one in the main living area, one per main bedroom, and optionally, one for a basement or home office. Larger or multi-story homes may want one unit per floor, plus bedroom units.
Finally, consider your priorities. If your budget is tight, start with the bedrooms and the main living space, and expand later. If allergies, asthma, or smoke are serious issues, aim for more coverage rather than less, so every frequently used room has its own purifier.
