The Airpura S400DLX is a compact, high-powered air purifier built to reduce formaldehyde, airborne chemicals, VOCs, gases, and odors. It holds 12 lbs of Airpura's SuperGas carbon, a proprietary hybrid blend that targets formaldehyde like the F-series and adsorbs a wide range of other VOCs and chemicals like the V-series. Formaldehyde, ammonia, pesticides, benzene, and toluene are some of the most common indoor chemicals linked to headaches, drowsiness, and rhinitis, and they're often released by new furniture, pressed wood, flooring, and other modern building materials. The S400DLX covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. at 2 air changes per hour (ACH), depending on fan speed, and runs as quiet as 32 dB on low.
SuperGas Carbon: The Best of the V and F Series
Most carbon blends are built for one job. Airpura's F-series carbon is designed to target formaldehyde, while the enhanced carbon in the V400 & V414 covers a wide range of VOCs and specific chemicals. SuperGas is a hybrid of the two. It reduces formaldehyde like the F-series and also adsorbs the broader range of chemicals the V-series handles, making the S400DLX a strong all-around choice when you're dealing with formaldehyde plus other chemicals from new furniture, flooring, renovations, or nearby industry.
What's in SuperGas Carbon?
SuperGas is Airpura's proprietary carbon blend, so we can't share the exact ingredients or amounts. For our MCS clients, we can tell you that it contains potassium permanganate (a smaller percentage than the F400DLX), zeolite, and potassium iodide. If you're sensitive to any of these, please contact us before ordering so we can help you choose the right unit.
Why a HEPA Barrier Instead of True HEPA?
Airpura's C, T, and DLX models give most of their filter space to carbon for VOC, gas, and odor adsorption. To make room for the deeper carbon bed, the S400DLX uses a HEPA barrier that is 95% effective at 1 micron instead of a medical-grade True HEPA canister, which is 99.97% effective at 0.3 microns. The HEPA barrier still captures larger particles, but the S400DLX is designed for situations where chemicals are the main concern rather than ultrafine particles.
S400DLX vs. S400: What's the Difference?
Both units use Airpura's SuperGas carbon, the same compact all-metal housing, and the same motor. The difference is how the filter space is divided between carbon and particle filtration.
S400DLX – 12 lbs of SuperGas carbon with a HEPA barrier (95% at 1 micron). Best when formaldehyde, VOCs, gases, and odors are the main concern.
S400 – 8 lbs of SuperGas carbon with a medical-grade True HEPA filter (99.97% at 0.3 microns). Best when fine particles matter as much as chemicals.
Sizing Your S400DLX
At high speed, the S400DLX delivers about 2 air changes per hour in 1,000 sq. ft. with 8-foot ceilings. For heavier chemical loads, more than 1 air change is necessary, and our clients frequently aim for 5 or more ACH depending on square footage. Many factors come into play when choosing an air purifier, including the contaminants, coverage (enough air changes for the level of off-gassing), how quickly things are off-gassing, particulate matter, and your own sensitivities.
