Smoke affecting air quality in Lake County

Increase smoke in the Lake County area has harmed its air quality.

Fires raging throughout northern and central areas of California, along with southern parts of Oregon, have been cited as the cause of a decrease in the air quality in Lake County, California area due to smoke. The fires which began on July 30, on account of lightning, have activated more than 1,500 firefighting personnel and have cost roughly $7 million. According to Lake County News, Doug Gearhart, Lake County Pollution Control Officer, has attributed the increased presence of smoke to the Dark Hole and El Portal fires in Mariposa County along with the Lodge fire in Mendocino County.

Smoke pollution can be especially hazardous to young children, the elderly and people with heart conditions, asthma and other respiratory conditions. Irritations of the nasal passages and eyes are just a few of the symptoms. The Lake County Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Tait, in accordance with the air district, suggests that anybody with extreme sensitivities to impurities in the air refrain from outdoor activity and be diligent in taking appropriate medications.

“Variable weather conditions and ongoing fire activity may result in localized areas of reduced air quality, which could still pose health risks to people with underlying health conditions,” Tait told Lake County News. “Since we can’t always predict when and where ‘pockets’ of poorer air quality may occur, it is prudent to be careful until conditions stabilize.”

Authorities also advised the use of any devices that can improve indoor air quality like an air conditioner or home air purifier.
