Women with asthma could face a delay in becoming pregnant

Asthma can affect how long it takes a woman to get pregnant.

According to a report from Danish researchers, women who suffer from asthma could face difficulties when trying to conceive. Those leading the study wrote that it is not clear whether asthma has direct biological effects on fertility, or whether having the disease reduces how often the couples are able to try for a baby. The information presented in the research only indicate a trend so far and further exploration into these questions will be needed in order to find a direct link.

But the information that has been discovered so far shows a very clear pattern, even if the cause is not immediately apparent. Scientists from Bispebjerg University Hospital in Denmark analyzed data collected from questionnaires that were distributed among 15,000 twins living in the country, ranging from their mid 20s to early 40s. Twins were used so that the information could lend to direct comparisons between the identical sisters. They served as a representative sample for the entire female population of Denmark, as they were born into all social groups and measuring the genetics and lifestyle information for each individual could be avoided.

The women were broken up into groups of those with asthma and those without. Almost 1,000 participants reported being diagnosed and treated for asthma and these women were found to have experienced a prolonged time to get pregnant, compared to those who were asthma free. Age was also a factor in the results: The women over the age of 30 who have asthma were likely to experience a much longer waiting time to pregnancy versus the women under 30-years-old.
