Ways to avoid winter allergies

Don't suffer this winter- reduce your risk of allergies by keeping yourself and your home clean.

Winter weather is not pleasant for anybody to endure, but it can be especially harsh on those who suffer from allergies. Because of the cold environment, people spend more time indoors during this season than others. This can greatly increase a person’s exposure to allergens that are hidden within the house. These allergens can include dust mites, mold, pet dander, fumes from household cleaners and smoke. To avoid your life being miserable this winter, follow these instructions from allergy experts.

Create a bedroom sanctuary: Consider your room the safe space from the rest of your house. To keep this area as free from potential allergens as possible, you should keep plants, carpets and pets out. This way you avoid dust mites in your carpet or sheets, animal fur and dander or mold from any dying or slowly decaying plants. By creating a barrier around your room, you can sleep soundly knowing you will not wake up with worsening allergies.

Maintain reasonable humidity: To avoid mold growth in your house, the ideal level of humidity should be between 30 and 40 percent. Do this with either a humidifier or dehumidifier, but make sure to change the water and filters on a regular basis so they cannot become infected with bacteria contamination.

Wash, often: Not only should you regularly wash your hands throughout the day, especially after you have been spending time outside or with a family pet, washing your sheets and pillow cases is also a must. Don’t let dust and old skin cells collect on your bed and make you sick. To kill the microscopic irritants that can be lurking on your bed, be sure to clean your sheets in hot water that is 130 degrees.
