Warm Arizona winter weather has offered little relief for allergy sufferers

An unusually warm winter has had an effect on those who suffer from allergies.

For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, winter often comes as a relief. It is a few months out of the year where there are very few things that can trigger their symptoms, as the plants and other items that have them coughing and wheezing are all blanketed under snow and ice. However, this is not the case for this particular winter, where some areas of the country are experiencing unusually warm temperatures for this time of year. This is in stark contrast to the East Coast and some Southern states, that are seeing record-low temperatures and snowfall.

In Arizona, temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s over the course of the next week, bringing plants out of their usual winter dormancy. This is unwelcome news for those who needed a break from their allergies. Some of the plants have even been entirely unaffected by the winter, according to horticulturist Brian Kissinger.

Spring is typically one of the worst times of year for those who suffer from allergies and asthma, as nature the entire world seemingly springs back to life, bringing with it everything that triggers those uncomfortable symptoms. With no real winter as a safeguard, many residents will be forced to have their prescriptions filled and at the ready earlier than they normally would.

“Because that warmer weather started so much earlier this year, we’ve been seeing more patients having allergy symptoms as early as January. Normally we don’t see that until March or April,” allergist Miriam Anand told Phoenix NPR station KJZZ.
