Spring Pollen Expected to be Worse Than Average This Year

With spring setting in in most parts of North America, many people have noticed that it has been warmer than usual for this time of the year. These higher than usual temperatures, though they are more than welcome after the long winter months, are also a contributing factor to excessive pollen levels in the air. In fact, this year is expected to produce some of the highest spring pollen levels of the last decade.

How Are Higher Temperatures and Spring Pollen Linked?

When spring comes early and with higher than average temperatures, plants begin to produce pollen at a faster rate than in cooler years. Early warm weather also brings plants out earlier, making for an allergy season that is both longer and more intense than average. This can happen anytime that warm weather sets in earlier than usual, but is particularly likely to occur at the end of an El Nino cycle, which is the case in 2016. This natural weather cycle can cause high levels of spring pollen and, in turn, very severe allergic reactions in those with pollen allergies.

How to Manage Your Spring Allergies

In a heavy allergy season, managing your allergies can be difficult, but it is not impossible. Here are a few basic steps you can take to manage your allergies with high spring pollen levels:

  • Try to stay inside during the warmest parts of the day, when pollen levels will be at their highest.
  • Keep your house closed up as much as possible. Central air systems can be used to circulate air within your house to keep it from getting too stuffy. If you need to open your windows for some fresh air, try to keep them open only at night.
  • Change your clothes immediately after spending time outdoors. Pollen can settle on your clothing and cause you to experience allergy symptoms for the rest of the day.
  • Use an air purification system at home and, if possible, at work. Keeping the air around you free of pollen is the best way to manage your allergies. Check out our line of high-quality residential air purifiers to find a unit that is right for your needs.

2016 is going to be one of the heaviest allergy seasons we’ve had in a very long time, so be sure that you’re prepared before your symptoms get the best of you.
