Researchers find that a two-drug nasal spray can improve sleep in allergy patients

Nasal spray may help allergy patients sleep better at night.

When people suffer from allergic rhinitis, more commonly known as hay fever or seasonal allergies, they often have a hard time performing simple daily tasks — and this can include falling asleep at night. That being said, researchers recently discovered that by giving patients a combination of two different nasal spray drugs, they can increase their chances of having a good night's sleep.

"In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, the combination of azelastine hydrochloride and fluticasone propionate (Dymista) significantly improved all individual nasal symptoms," states MedPage Today. "At the same time, the spray significantly improved all aspects of quality of life, including better sleep."

According to the source, people who suffer from allergies are more likely than others to have a hard time getting the rest that they need, as symptoms such as sneezing, postnasal drip and itchy eyes can prevent them from falling asleep.

"If you improve the nasal congestion[…] then people sleep better," Dr. Lyndon Mansfield of Allergy Partners in El Paso, Texas, told the news outlet.

Individuals who have seasonal allergies should consult their physicians to see what they can do to better their quality of life. Additionally, there are other simple actions you can take around the house to ensure that your symptoms are under control, such as investing in residential air purifiers. These effective devices work by eliminating common household pollutants such as mold, pet dander, pollen and tobacco smoke directly from the air so that you aren't breathing them in.
