According to a new report, the rate of asthma in the U.S. is one the decline.
According to a new survey, asthma rates across the United States are on the decline, though experts are reluctant to call the situation a permanent downturn. The new information caught researchers by surprise, so much so that scientists from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) want to do a more thorough look before making any broader claims about asthma in the country.
The report was released on the morning of Thursday, June 19, by the CDC. According to the information, last year saw the lowest percentage of Americans saying they have asthma in over a decade. Over the last few years, the number of people in the U.S. who have asthma remained steady at 8.6 percent, though this number fell to 7.4 percent – a drop of over three million people – in 2013.
The survey that was conducted by the CDC included in-person interviews of 47,000 people. The groups that saw the biggest declines in asthma rates were women and black children. Though these numbers point to a positive trend, experts are reluctant to make anything official until more extensive research can be done to explain why the numbers are suddenly dropping.
“I wouldn’t say it’s good news — yet,” said the study’s lead author, Jeannine Schiller of the CDC.
“Nationally, I’m not aware of anything that would explain these statistics,” said Dr. Karen Freedle, an Emory University specialist in pediatric asthma.
