New allergies can develop later in life

You can develop allergies at any point in your life.

Just because you’ve never suffered from seasonal allergies in the past doesn’t mean you’re immune to them for the rest of your life, according to a recent article published by FOX8, a North Carolina news outlet. The source reports that people can develop — or outgrow — allergies at any point in their lives depending on a number of different factors, including both environment and genetic makeup.

For example, if you’ve relocated to another part of the country, you may encounter triggers that weren’t really present in the previous place you called home.

“People move here from different parts of the world, and, of course, there are different allergens in different parts. Here in North Carolina, we have a lot of beautiful trees and plants, and that is often the explanation for why they have developed new allergies, even though it is later in life for them,” Dr. Sokun Bhatti of the Allergy and Asthma Center of North Carolina told the news outlet.

Many people who begin having allergic reactions as adults mistake their allergies for other afflictions like the common cold. As such, it’s a good idea to see an allergy specialist if your symptoms persist for longer than a few weeks. Once you find out exactly what you’re allergic to, there are special treatments that can improve your quality of life.
