Marathon runners to raise awareness of allergies and asthma

Team AANMA plans to run the 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon this weekend to raise awareness of asthma and allergies.

You don't have to let asthma symptoms interfere with your life and the goals you hope to accomplish. Alexandria, Virginia, resident Tony Cook certainly hasn't. According to an Allergy & Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics (AANMA) press release, the 50-year-old will be running in the 38th annual Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., this Sunday, October 27, to raise awareness of his condition.

Cook wasn't always healthy enough to run a marathon, though. The source reports that his condition was so bad — like a boa constrictor around his chest, he said — that he was forced to quit his job so he could focus on his health.

Fortunately, with the help of a new procedure called Bronchial Thermoplasty, Cook's symptoms have reduced significantly and he has since become an avid runner.

"Tony and other Team AANMA members are inspiring examples of what people with asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) and allergies can accomplish," Tonya Winders, chief operating officer of the AANMA, said in a press statement. "With an accurate diagnosis, a comprehensive strategy to manage symptoms and a determination to succeed, running a marathon is well within reach. Team AANMA's support for allergy and asthma will help others achieve their goals."
