Harsh winter will bring strong spring allergies

Spring allergies are expected to be tough this year.

The past few months have been particularly harsh, with many considering this the most extreme winter we have experienced in years. Even parts of the country that usually escape this season unscathed – such as the Southern states – were not able to avoid the low temperatures and snow. So, while this winter is slowly winding down, many are breathing a sigh of relief. The warm weather is on its way, and we can start enjoying time outside again. But if you are one of the millions of Americans who has seasonal allergies, there are months of suffering ahead.

According to asthma and allergy experts, this upcoming spring is going to be very tough for those who suffer from a breathing affliction. The number of Americans who have seasonal allergies is currently around 40 million, though this grows each year. Dr. Clifford Bassett, the medical director at Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, recently spoke to the hosts of “CBS This Morning” about why this upcoming spring will be hard for those with allergies.

“Precipitation, all that rain and snow, record temperatures, a lot of good stuff for those root systems of trees and plants – they’re primed and they’re ready to go. And they’re already releasing their pollens earlier,” Dr. Bassett said. “All of these things point to earlier allergy seasons and these seasons are getting people unsuspectingly.” Dr. Bassett also told viewers that the best way to be prepared is to stock up on your medications early and begin taking them even before you experience your first symptom.
