Certain blood pressure medications can cause oral allergy syndrome

People who are on certain blood pressure medications may experience an allergic reaction when they eat fruits and vegetables.

Individuals who are taking ACE inhibitors — drugs that are commonly used to treat high blood pressure — may be at greater risk of developing oral allergy syndrome, an affliction that can cause potentially dangerous reactions to certain foods, reports HealthDay News.

“In oral allergy syndrome, the body confuses proteins in some fruits and vegetables for the proteins in irritating pollen grains,” states the source. “People who suffer from allergies to birch, grass and ragweed pollen seem to be especially susceptible.”

According to the news outlet, most of these allergic reactions simply cause an irritating swelling or tingling of the lips, but some can lead to more serious complications that require immediate medical attention.

“These reactions can be dangerous,” Dr. Denisa Ferastraoaru of the Montefiore Medical Center in New York City told the source. “One of our patients received epinephrine in the emergency department.”

With this information in mind, it’s important for individuals who take ACE inhibitors to be careful when they eat fresh produce, and to alert their physicians if they notice any allergy symptoms.
