Air quality in China leads to a major announcement

While the United States continues to debate what actions to take on a major scale to tackle the issue of global climate change and the damage being done to the environment, other countries are beginning to look at the issue seriously as well. Earlier this week, the Chinese government announced that there would be a major push throughout the nation to increase the number of electric cars on the road, wanting at least 30 percent of all cars purchased by the government to be electric by the year 2016.

This is on the heels of several reports that have detailed the truly horrific conditions of the air quality in China. As, the average concentration of dangerous pollutants in the air in the country throughout 2013 was nearly three times the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Scientists have compared the conditions to the effect of a nuclear winter, which is beginning to obstruct the life cycle of various plants and is becoming a major threat to Chinese agriculture.

The new measure for state owned vehicles is meant to jump-start an ambitious plan from the Chinese government that aims to get all of the high-polluting vehicles currently on the road that were registered before 2006 off the road by the end of 2016. The government is working hard to push the sale of electric cars, going as far as exempting all of them from a 10 percent purchase tax throughout at least 2017. Scientists are mixed as to whether or not this plan will have a strong enough impact on the environment, however.
