Air pollution leads to several health complications

A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine has found that air pollution increases the likelihood of sleeping problems. Air pollution has long been known to come with several negative consequences. But lead researcher Antonella Zanobetti, PhD, a senior research scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health, says that pollution raises the risks of poor sleep and directly contributes to sleep-disordered breathing.

Along with sleep apnea, where breathing briefly stops during sleep, a glut of other issues are all exacerbated by poor air quality, an outcome that is compounded by the fact that up to 17 percent of U.S. adults have some form of sleep-disordered breathing with many of them being unaware of it.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollution is specifically a major contributor to health problems. Along with respiratory illnesses, items like air fresheners, building materials, tobacco smoke and more all raise the risks of several cardiovascular health problems. Sometimes one of the most telling signs of polluted indoor air is if multiple people in a building begin exhibiting symptoms such as scratchy throats, constant coughing or difficulty breathing.

Ozone generators are often sold to improve indoor air quality. But the EPA has found that inhaling high concentrations of ozone can lead to damaged lungs, chest pains and shortness of breath as well as worsening cases of asthma. The agency goes on to say that there is no scientific research supporting the use of ozone generators as being effective for removing dust, pollen and chemicals from the air, according to a University of Rochester article
