4 ways to deal with allergies while traveling

Manage your allergies while traveling with these four tips.

It can be difficult to keep your allergies in check when you're away from home, but don't let that keep you from traveling. There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you will be comfortable and able to manage your symptoms while on the road or in the air. Here are a few of them:

  • Pack your medication in your carry-on. One of the worst feelings in the world is losing your luggage with your medications inside. Make sure to pack the entire trip's worth of medications in something you'll have easily at hand, like a purse or a backpack, and bring extra doses in case anything happens in transit.
  • Use pillow covers. If you're allergic to dust mites or pet dander and are staying at a friend's or family member's home, bringing along a few zippered pillow covers can help protect you from allergens while you sleep.
  • Avoid traffic. On a road trip, plan your traveling time so that you end up on the road when as few cars as possible will be traveling along with you. This will allow you to breathe easier, especially if you have asthma. However, if you're traveling through an area with a lot of pollinating plants, it's best to keep the windows rolled up anyway.
  • Stay in allergy-friendly hotels. An increasing number of hotels are targeting their accommodations toward people with allergies, using hypoallergenic sheets and pillows and prohibiting smoking from their premises entirely. Ask if the hotel you're planning to stay in is allergy-friendly before making your reservation.
