What to think about before buying an air purifier

Make sure you take these factors into account when choosing an air purifier.

Whether your home has an air quality problem or you're looking to improve your allergy symptoms by removing dust and pet allergens from the air, a home air purifier can significantly improve your quality of life. Simply by allowing yourself to breathe cleaner air, you will find that your energy and general health improve. Here are a few things to take into account when shopping for your new air purifier:

  • Consider what you will be using the air purifier for. If you're aiming to reduce the quantity of allergens in the air you breathe to mitigate seasonal or pet allergies, you should look for an air purifier for allergies, which usually feature High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. These filters are designed to catch all particulate matter that is larger than 0.3 microns. Most allergens, such as pollen, mold spores, pet dander and ragweed, fall into this category. On the other hand, if asthma symptoms due to smoke and other fumes in the home are your main concern, you will want to find an air purifier specifically designed for asthma or for smoke.
  • Decide where you will place your air purifier. Air purifiers can only clean the air in one room at a time, so it's recommended to place your air purifier in the room that you spend the most time in.
  • Look into maintenance and noise level. Check on how often you'll have to change the filter, and if noise is a concern for you, take a look at each unit's decibel (dB) rating before making your final decision. Most air purifiers aren't noisy enough to cause problems, but some are still quieter than others.
