How to reduce your exposure to air pollution

Try to avoid running along major roadways to decrease your exposure to air pollution.

Exposure to high levels of air pollution has been linked to numerous health problems, from respiratory issues to dementia and stroke. If you live in a particularly polluted area, you might think that exposing yourself to these risks is a foregone conclusion. However, there are a few easy steps you can take to reduce how much pollution you and your family are exposed to:

  • Time outdoor activities to avoid peak pollution times. During rush hour, the amount of pollutants in the air increases dramatically due to all the cars on the road, so if you go out for a run every day, try to do it either before or after these times. Particularly hot late afternoons are also bad times for air quality in general.
  • Follow your area's local air quality advisory warnings. By visiting www.airnow.gov, you can find out what the air quality in your region is supposed to look like in the upcoming days, and even sign up for email and text alerts when an air quality warning is in effect.
  • Exercise away from major roads. Rather than jogging along the side of a major roadway, try to find a local park or wooded area where air pollution is likely to be lower. According to Barbara MacKinnon of the New Brunswick Lung Association, with every foot you move away from major traffic corridors, pollution density decreases.
  • Use a home air purifierTo make your home into a sanctuary where you can retreat from the effects of air pollution, invest in a home air purifier to clean the air in the spaces where you spend the most time in your home.
